Match fixing controversy[edit]

The Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) which organises the men's professional tour, launched an investigation into a match between then world number 4, Davydenko and world number 85, Martín Vassallo Argüello on 2 August 2007, in the third round of Sopot. After a series of large bets were placed totalling more than £3 million on British gambling company, Betfair alone. The gambling saw large bets being placed on Vassallo Argüello even after losing the first set 2-6. Davydenko withdrew from the match during the third set with a foot injury. Even after Davydenko's recent form, it didn't make sense to Betfair that such a heavy portion of the bets would be against Davydenko at this point in the match. A total of US$7 million had been wagered on the match, ten times the usual amount. As a result of the irregularities all bets were voided. The investigation lasted a year and cleared Davydenko and Vassallo Argüello of any involvement in the match fixing.
